2005 Cumbria Survey Results

A mapping survey commenced in September 2005 when postal questionnaires were sent out to all known social enterprises in Cumbria. So far almost 500 social enterprises have been contacted and the results so far show:

  • a turnover within the sector in excess of £181 million
  • approximately 65% of those involved are women
  • over 3,300 jobs have been created and these businesses involve almost 3,000 volunteers in both management and operational roles
  • childcare and the provision of premises were the most popular services, closely followed by financial services (often in the form of Credit Unions) and IT services
