The Social Entrepreneur Lord Andrew Mawson, Bromley-by-Bow Centre
Lord Andrew Mawson is one of the leading social entrepreneurs in Britain and has created a family of projects which demonstrate in practice the potential of social enterprise. He is Founder and President of the renowned Bromley-by-Bow Centre in East London and Co-founder and President of Community Action Network (CAN), a national charity supporting 850 social entrepreneurs across the UK.
Bow Centre has pioneered a whole new approach to community regeneration, which uses social entrepreneurship and the creative arts as the tools to transform one of the most deprived areas of the UK. The Bromley-by-Bow model is now recognised internationally and Andrew has been invited to present his work at numerous international symposiums including The 18th World Conference on Health Promotion and Health Education sponsored by the World Health Organisation.
Andrew received an OBE for his work in Tower Hamlets in the Millennium New Years Honours List. He was awarded a Life Peerage in 2007 by the House of Lords Appointments Commission and sits on the Crossbenches in the Upper House. Today Andrew concentrates on a number of major projects as leader, motivator and adviser. In particular these are; St Paul’s Way, Water City, Silvertown Quays and One Church.
"Andrew Mawson is social justice in motion. A hard hitting, tough talking gentle doer of big business change". You don't get praise like this from John Bird the founder of The Big Issue, without doing something very special indeed. Andrew is now one of the leading social entrepreneurs in the country and is author of the both critically acclaimed and the wonderfully inspirational book "The Social Entrepreneur - making communities work." |

Social Enterprise and the Public Service
Gill Coupland, co-founder & Director, Angels Housekeeping
Gill Coupland is the co-founder and Director of Angels Housekeeping, a social enterprise which provides housework and shopping services for elderly people, to help them stay as independent as possible. The company was born out of the need for domestic care services in Leeds following the City Council’s withdrawal from the provision of these services. The business is able to provide its services at very affordable rates to elderly people through its price weighting, which charges a slightly higher rate for services to young professionals and companies.
In many ways anticipating the personalisation agenda which has now moved to the centre of social care, in just over three years, Angel’s Housekeeping has gone from an operation with seven clients to a team of 30 with 300+ clients.
The success of the company has also persuaded Leeds City Council to re-invest in these services. ‘Keeping House’ is a partnership programme sponsored by the Leeds Adult Social Care, which has committed to contributing £900,000 over 4 years from 2005 to 2009. The programme sits within the framework of ‘Older, Better’, the Leeds strategy to promote a healthy and active life for older people. In addition, Angels Housekeeping is on track to claim £100,000 in benefits for its customers this year.
Gill has a background in law and accountancy. |

Social Enterprise - Making a Difference in Cumbria
Daniel Heery, Chief Executive, Cybermoor
Daniel leads the technology and community based social enterprise Cybermoor, the first rural broadband co-operative in the country. Cybermoor has provided high speed broadband in Alston Moor, the most sparsely populated parish in the UK. Providing broadband where other providers won’t, Cybermoor works with social enterprises, SMEs, voluntary and public sector organisations encouraging them to use ICT innovatively and the organisation re-invests profits back towards providing affordable broadband for rural residents.
Daniel is currently developing Alston Healthcare, a NHS Pathfinder Project that will deliver e-health services in Cumbria, again providing creative solutions to deliver healthcare closer to home.
With a background in planning, Daniel has a broad perspective on social enterprise and the impact it can have in rural areas in particular. An experienced speaker and commentator, Daniel has strong views on digital inclusion policy and was consulted on the Digital Britain report. |

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE SAFARI
To complement this event and to see social enterprise in action, CSEP is also delighted to be able to offer you the opportunity to visit the community of Alston Moor for a 'Social Enterprise Safari'. Alston Moor is arguably the Social Enterprise Capital of the UK, with one social enterprise per 60 households. The 'Safaris' will take place on Wednesday, 23rd March and Monday, 28th March from 10am to 3pm. The day will be a chance to visit and find out more about the range of services that are delivered within the community by social enterprises, including Cybermoor, the first community owned broadband co-operative.
